The Zimbabwean cricket crisis and past controversies over the use of player commercial rights will be high on the agenda of next week’s meeting in London of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (Fica).
Fica is the international body consisting of player associations from most of the test playing countries. It represents international cricketers worldwide and deals with the International Cricket Council (ICC) on issues affecting all professional cricketers.
The South African Cricketers’ Association (Saca) will be represented at the meeting by its CEO, Tony Irish.
”This year’s meeting of international cricketers’ representatives will be a particularly important one,” said Irish.
”Issues on our agenda include how player commercial rights will be dealt with at the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in England in September as well as the recent Zimbabwean crisis.
”From a player point of view we are all working together in endeavours with the ICC to avoid past problems such as the conflict between ICC sponsors and individual player sponsors. As far as Zimbabwe is concerned we will be dealing with player concerns across the cricketing world over the sacking of the Zimbabwean players. We see this both as a principle issue and one which affects the strength of the international game.” – Sapa
