Durban art picks: January 28 2011

Art on paper is the focus this week.

  • A cornerstone of the KwaZulu-Natal arts scene for over fifty years, the African Art Centre maintains committed to its founding philosophy of providing a space for both established and emerging artists from the province to showcase their work and to give citizens of Durban a unique perspective on the multiplicity, depth and diversity of art and culture in KZN. The new exhibition at the AAC is entitled On Paper and features artworks in a range of paper-based media including etchings, drawings, paintings, lithographs and linocuts representing a variety of techniques and formats by both established and emerging artists. Featured artists include William Zulu, Sphiwe Zulu, Nonhlanhla Mhlongo, Lingo Diko and Bongani Ngubeni and all works are priced below R1 200.

  • City Breath is the selection of experimental film from South Africa which has been collated by curator Kai Lossgott. Through their common theme of brevity, these short video gasps from South African cities give voice to the dreams and nightmares of local poets, dancers, performance artists and filmmakers. At under 4 minutes each, the films represent a genre seldom seen in mainstream South African film and television as they interrogate in idiosyncratic fashion the manner in which the citizens of this country understand their cities and urban life. The exhibition combines existing works with new creations it has initiated in the areas of the video poem, screen dance and experimental film.
