Durban foodie pick: September 30 2011

An exciting new social upliftment initiative called Food 4 Thought hosts its inaugural gourmet food and wine-tasting evening at one of Durban’s top restaurants this week.

The project raises funds for the expansion and work of Umthombo, a Durban-based organisation that improves the lives and future prospects of street children. All monies raised from the dinner go to Umthombo. Three of Durban’s top chefs from Café 1999, Market Restaurant and 9th Avenue Bistro join forces to prepare a mouth-watering five-course menu with paired wines.

It features delicacies such as confit quail breast on seared foie gras with pear-and-saffron chutney; goat’s cheese, baby beetroot, watercress and pine-nut salad; ginger-and-sesame seared tuna, Vietnamese herb salad, sushi ginger sorbet, sous-vide sirloin, braised, pressed beef shin, mushroom brioche and bone-marrow sauce; chocolate brownie with raspberry semifreddo and Swissland Drakensberg wedge with pear and polenta cake; and candied pecan nuts and goat’s cheese spread.

Café 1999, October 3 at 7pm. Tickets are R595 a person and booking is essential. Tel: 071 392 3387. Website: www.food4thoughtkzn.co.za.
