Durban music picks: September 30 2011

The 2011 edition of White Mountain, KwaZulu-Natal’s idyllic acoustic music festival, once again boasts a stellar line-up of artists, and Prime Circle bring MOR rock to suburbia.

? Treading the tricky line between anthem-like pop and brooding rock, Prime Circle are one of the few modern mainstream musical successes crafting beautiful, sincere songs that are neither sentimental radio slush nor self-centred pity parties. Their latest singles, Never Gonna Bring Us Down and Turn Me to Stone, come across as slowed-down Jesus & Mary Chain by way of REM in their ability to fuse churning guitars with soaring melodies to create broad popular appeal. The band has just returned from yet another sold-out tour of Europe. They perform two concerts in one of Durban’s most sophisticated live music venues, which has state-of-the-art sound that brings out all the power and grace of the Prime Circle oeuvre.

The Barnyard Theatre, October 3 and 4 at 8pm. Tickets are R160 and booking is essential. Tel: 031 566 3045. Website: www.barnyardtheatre.co.za.
