Durban music picks: November 11 2011

Legendary Durban jazz venue The Rainbow Restaurant celebrates its 30th birthday on ­December 18.

The event promises to be epic with a big band directed by jazz icon Steve Dyer paying tribute to all the great South African musicians and groups who have graced the Rainbow Restaurant’s stage over the past three decades — which ­translates into a veritable who’s who of South African luminaries from 1981 to the present day.

? A unique initiative ­celebrating acoustic music in its ­broadest sense is ­under way in ­Durban. Bands, soloists, ­singers, singer-songwriters and ­instrumentalists of every stripe are invited to enter the fray — first prize is recording time worth R10 000 from The Audio Suit to produce the winner’s five -track recording. Three rounds take place on November 21, November 28 and December 5 with the winner of each round facing off in the finals on December 12.
