Growth in house prices in the middle segment of the market slowed to a nominal 11,2% year-on-year in December 2007 — the lowest price growth since December 1999, when it was 9,3%, the Absa house-price index showed on Thursday. Nominal price growth of 12,5% year-on-year was recorded in November last year.

Diamond giant De Beers, which is 45% owned by global resources giant Anglo American, is to pay a $295-million class-action settlement after it was accused of fixing diamond prices and monopolising the United States diamond market. However, De Beers has not acknowledged that it violated the law or did anything wrong.

Talks are under way to explore the possibility of South Africa being invited to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) — the so-called "rich man’s club" of nations. The 30 OECD countries have already given the green light for the start of accession talks with five prospective new members.

Kagiso Trust announced on Thursday the death of its chairperson, Yunus Mahomed. He was 57. He died on Sunday. Kgotso Schoeman, chief executive of Kagiso Trust, said: "Yunus, or YM as he was affectionately known, was a passionate and consistent leader."

Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi’s bid to stop the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) from proceeding with prosecution against him will be heard in the Pretoria High Court on Friday. South Africa’s mining sector made a positive contribution to the overall GDP in the third quarter of 2007, but this is not expected to be the case in the fourth quarter, Efficient Group economist Fanie Joubert said on Thursday. "The main stumbling block to the mining sector is the strike action as well as deaths on the mines," said Joubert.

At least 22 Pakistani riot police were killed in a suicide-bomb attack outside the high court in the commercial heart of Lahore on Thursday, officers said. The bomber set off a device packed with ball bearings when police stopped him outside the court, two weeks to the day after the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

Australian Open organisers on Thursday said there would be a heavy police presence at this year’s tournament to prevent the brawls and sexually related offences that marred the event in 2007. Police were caught off-guard in 2007 when locally based Serbian and Croatian fans clashed on the first day of the tournament.
