A pathologist hired by the family of a South African-born woman who died in police custody at the Phoenix airport said she accidentally strangled herself — but he also blamed police for her death. Dr Cyril Wecht said officers roughed up the 45-year-old mother, who was flying from New York to an alcohol treatment centre.

Gauteng faces huge classroom shortages and the government does not have the resources to cope, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Tuesday. DA spokesperson David Quail said that in the next four to six years, the Gauteng department of education will require 9 566 additional classrooms.

A hot model is South Africa’s idea of the perfect neighbour, according to research by South Africa’s largest online search portal, <i>Propertygenie.co.za</i>, which lists more than 125Â 000 properties nationwide. The survey was carried out in late October and early November this year to probe South Africans’ attitudes to their neighbours.

The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria has approved a grant of ,3-million to boost Kenya’s anti-HIV/Aids drive, the Health Ministry announced on Tuesday. The grant will finance programmes over the next five years, but an initial amount of ,1-million will be released in the first two years.

Oil prices dropped on Tuesday after a key Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) member left open the possibility the oil cartel will increase output to curb rising prices, and following the strengthening of the dollar overnight. Light, sweet crude for December delivery fell by six cents to ,56 a barrel.

Members of Parliament heard on Tuesday that the South African Post Office has made 40% more trading profit in the first six months of this financial year than it did last year. Chief financial officer Nick Buick said that the six months’ net profit for this year was R210-million, 20% above last year’s interim result.
