Citigroup CEO Prince to resign

Citigroup chief executive Charles Prince plans to resign this weekend, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday, as the widening subprime mortgage crisis brings to an end the reign of Sanford Weill’s troubled successor. The largest United States bank by assets plans to hold an emergency board meeting on Sunday, at which Prince will step down.

Portsmouth frets that Nations Cup could wreck dream

Harry Redknapp fears the African Nations Cup could wreck Portsmouth’s European ambitions after his side’s impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle strengthened their top four credentials. White in talks with England rugby chiefs

World Cup-winning South Africa coach Jake White has held talks with England rugby chiefs, a media report said on Sunday. White guided South Africa to a 15-6 victory over England in the World Cup final at the Stade de France in Paris on October 20 and announced on Wednesday that he would quit his post in December.

Kurdish rebels free abducted Turkish soldiers

Eight Turkish soldiers, kidnapped last month in an ambush by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants, were released in northern Iraq, a PKK official said on Sunday. The release of the soldiers came a day after the Iraqi government vowed to hunt down Kurdish guerrilla leaders responsible for cross-border raids into Turkey.

Mbeki’s men bid R7-billion to buy Johncom

President Thabo Mbeki’s political adviser and a government official are among a group who want to take over Johnnic Communications (Johncom). Koni Media Holdings, a company belonging to Mbeki’s adviser Titus Mafolo, Foreign Affairs Department spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa, former chief of state protocol Billy Modise and a businessman, have launched a R7-billion bid.

Musharraf imposes emergency rule

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has imposed a state of emergency in a bid to end an eight-month crisis over his rule stoked by challenges from a hostile judiciary, Islamist militants and political rivals. General Musharraf said he decided to act on Saturday in response to a rise in extremism and what he called the paralysis of government by judicial interference.
