A senior Darfur rebel leader accused the Sudanese government on Wednesday of trying to grab land ahead of October peace talks, and threatened to pull out of the talks unless attacks stopped. Justice and Equality Movement leader Khalil Ibrahim said the violence in the remote west would make it impossible for him to travel to negotiations with Khartoum.

A powerful earthquake struck near Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey said, and the shock was felt across South-East Asia. A tsunami warning was issued by several Indian Ocean countries. Several buildings in Padang, the provincial capital of Indonesia’s West Sumatra, collapsed, Global TV reported.

Britain found a suspected case of foot-and-mouth disease on a farm in southern England on Wednesday and immediately imposed an exclusion zone and had the herd in question culled. A statement on the Agriculture Ministry’s website said an exclusion zone had been placed around the suspect farm in Egham, Surrey, about 50km from the scene of the last outbreak in August.

South Africans spend most of their time on news and weather internet sites when they are online, a study done in August by global internet media and market researcher NetRatings has revealed. News and weather sites account for 23% of the time that South Africans spend online, which translates into about 1,1-million hours.

India’s most famous monument, the Taj Mahal, is turning yellow, and the Archaeological Survey of India has decided to give it a mud-pack beauty treatment to restore its pristine white beauty, news reports said on Wednesday. The mud packs will be left to dry for a couple of days and then be washed off.

Three men accused of raping three Durban women at a Pennington beach house on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast were found guilty in the Scottburgh High Court on Wednesday. The three were found guilty of five counts of rape. They were also found guilty of indecent assault and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
