Zim sports heroes must speak up

What would happen if Portsmouth’s Benjani Mwaruwaru was to score a goal and dedicate it to the hundreds of opposition activists who are in detention now, to the thousands of people who are dying of Aids because they have no access to ARVs and the millions who have been forced to flee from their homes because of the crisis in Zimbabwe?

Race on for top dog at Arsenal

Henri Bianchéri, the man who helped Arsène Wenger sign Thierry Henry for Monaco, on Wednesday declared his candidacy to fill the vacant director of football position at Arsenal. The Frenchman spent 19 years as Monaco’s general manager, where he was a key ally of Wenger during the latter’s seven-year spell in the principality, and he is keen to renew their association.

World teams now ‘clamouring’ to play Bafana

”They haven’t come to South Africa for a soccer game in 100 years,” said Danny Jordaan at a media briefing of the newly formed South African Football Association (Safa) commercial wing on Wednesday, ”but you can be sure world champions Italy will now be in the queue clamouring to come here before the 2010 tournament.”

Aggressive buffalo gores Free State man

An aggressive bull buffalo killed a man and hampered the retrieval of his body on a farm near Bethlehem on Wednesday, Free State police said. Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said that Sam Shongwe (26) was returning from a pit latrine to a fenced area with two homes when the buffalo attacked at about 10am.

Stars sparkle against Sundowns

Silver Stars beat new league champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in a Premiership game played at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Stadium on Wednesday night. The home team’s industrial midfielder Dingaan Masanabo broke the deadlock in the 38th minute with a superb header from a corner kick taken by Tshepo Ramokala.

JSE off highs on PPI

The JSE remained higher at noon on Thursday on the back of Dow’s record moves overnight, but off its opening highs after producer price inflation (PPI) figures came in above forecast. At noon, the all-share index was up 0,21%. Resources gained 0,17% and the gold and platinum mining indices added 1,11% and 0,29% respectively.

Investigators bring Woolmer probe to SA

Jamaican investigators will travel with the body of slain Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer when it is returned to South Africa, and hope to gather information from relatives here to help identify any suspects in his killing, police officials said. Police will return the body on Thursday to Woolmer’s widow and sons in South Africa.

Australia keeps the Dogg out

Rapper Snoop Dogg has been refused entry into Australia because of his extensive criminal record, the immigration minister said on Thursday. It is the second time this year the troubled rapper has been barred from entering another country. Snoop Dogg was due to fly into Sydney this week to co-host the MTV Australia Video Music Awards.
