Cuban President Fidel Castro, in a handwritten statement published on Tuesday, said the worst part of a health crisis that made him shed 18,5kg is over and he will attend the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Cuba next week. ”You can say the most critical moment is behind me,” Castro said in the statement, published in the official daily, Granma.

One of South Africa’s foremost young jazz musicians, saxophonist Moses Khumalo (27), was found dead in his house in Honeydew, west of Johannesburg, on Monday September 4, West Rand police said. Khumalo’s girlfriend, who last saw the musician on Friday, went to check on him and found his body hanging in the house, police said.

The retrial of six foreign medics accused of infecting hundreds of Libyan children with the virus that causes Aids was adjourned to October on Tuesday after a defence lawyer failed to show up at court. ”The court held a very brief session and swiftly postponed the trial to October 12 because the lawyer of the Palestinian doctor was absent,” said lawyer Abdallah al Maghribi.

Italy defender Marco Materazzi has broken his silence over the verbal exchange that led to his violent World Cup final clash with French star Zinedine Zidane. Materazzi was sent crashing to the turf by a Zidane headbutt near the end of extra-time of the July 9 final in Berlin following a verbal altercation.

The JSE was weaker in noon trade on Tuesday having succumbed to profit-taking after reaching a record high in early trade. A higher bullion price allowed gold stocks to buck the trend. By 12.05pm, the all-share index slipped 0,39%. Industrials and financials fell 0,25% and 0,47% respectively and the banks index dipped 0,11%.
