Prolific songwriter Baker Knight, whose hits were recorded by stars ranging from Elvis Presley to Ricky Nelson, Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, has died. He was 72. Born Thomas Baker Knight Jnr, he died on Wednesday of natural causes at his home in Birmingham, according to his daughter, Tuesday Knight.

Aid finally started reaching some of Pakistan’s thousands of cold and hungry earthquake survivors on Monday as helicopters, trucks and donkeys raced to reach Himalayan villages cut off for nine days. The leader of Pakistani Kashmir put the toll from South Asia’s disaster at more than 54 000.

China’s most-acclaimed modern writer Ba Jin — whose novels criticised traditional Chinese society — died on Monday in Shanghai, state media said. He was 100. A native of Chengdu city in south-west China’s Sichuan province, Ba was considered by the government and other Chinese authors to be the greatest writer in modern China.

Retired Vatican finance chief Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio has died, the Vatican said on Monday. He was 90. The Vatican said the Italian cardinal died on Saturday. Pope Benedict XVI on Monday praised his service in a condolence message, saying Caprio served five popes in ”delicate and important” offices.

The international community has been called upon to assist the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in its peace-building initiatives, the office of Botswana President Festus Mogae said on Monday. The call was made by the Botswana/Zimbabwe Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security, Mogae said in a statement.
