DRC’s long road to TRC

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila has ratified an Act bringing the country’s truth and reconciliation commission into being. The Act comes within weeks of hostilities that culminated in the seizure and pillage of Bukavu by renegade forces. Post-conflict transformation isn’t possible in the DRC, a country still at war with itself.

Revamp takes shape

As Transnet CEO Maria Ramos fills in the details of her turnaround plan, it is becoming clear that extensive private sector involvement and a more creative approach to financing will be central to restructuring the parastatal. Wholesale privatisation may be out of the question for Transnet’s core rail and port operations, but the concessioning of specialised services seems likely to expand.

Gaddafi comes in from the cold

United States President George Bush has decided to lift sanctions against Libya, which he expects to trigger release of more than -billion to families of the Lockerbie victims, a senior administration official said. Bush could announce the step as early as Monday, the official said on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because Bush prefers to publicise such moves himself.

Another Paralympic medal for SA

Scott Field, South Africa’s visually impaired swimmer, won his second silver medal of the Athens Paralympics when he finished a strong second in the men’s 400m freestyle at the Aquatic Centre on Monday evening. Field swam four minutes and 30,19 seconds against the 4:28,84 that earned Walter Wu of Canada the gold medal.

There is no ‘I’ in the Ryder Cup

There is no ”I” in Ryder Cup. It’s a lesson the United States players and captains on the past 10 teams have stubbornly refused to learn. Europe won seven of those matches, including four of the last five, and the only US win in that latest run — at Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1999 — required the greatest final-day comeback in the history of the tournament.

Yet rape in times of war has historically been the least reported and condemned of war crimes. Lori Waselchuk, winner of the Southern African Gender and Media photojournalism award, hopes to give a voice to victims of rape in war-torn countries.

Big problems for European capital clubs

Capital city clubs Real Madrid, Roma and Paris Saint Germain all suffered shattering defeats at the weekend, which put the jobs at least two high-profile coaches on the line. Real, humbled 3-0 at Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League in midweek, lost 1-0 at Espanyol despite dropping David Beckham and Raul to the bench.
