In fading light, the murmur of a cool stream soothes your jangled nerves. Your back is slowly massaged, stretching muscles exhausted from the long commute home. Before you know it, you’re fast asleep. It sounds like treatment you might get at an exotic resort. But a Japanese company has developed a sleep machine system it says will deliver a full eight hours of z’s in your own bedroom.

UN sanctions on Liberia to stay

Struggling Liberia has insisted it is ready for sanctions on its diamond and timber industries to be lifted, but a wary United Nations, mindful of security concerns, has again advised that they remain in place. Liberian leader Gyude Bryant appeared before the UN Security Council last week asking that sanctions be lifted to boost the west African state’s war-battered economy and curb unemployment that has crested beyond 80%.

Kiss of life, or death?

The Democratic Alliance calls it the kiss of death — but the marriage of the African National Congress and the New National Party is symptomatic of a new politics of survival that other political parties could resort to. After the NNP federal council meeting last weekend, the two parties announced they would strengthen their working relationship, a move widely interpreted as the ANC swallowing up the dying Nats.
