We are ready, says Mbeki

Al-Jazeera airs hostage video

The Arabic television station Al-Jazeera showed footage on Tuesday of what it said are four Italian hostages abducted by insurgents in Iraq, as the top Italian diplomat in Baghdad confirmed four nationals are missing. A statement from the kidnappers called for ”a commitment to withdraw Italian troops from Iraq”, the station said.

Grintek to supply equipment to Malaysia

South Africa’s Grintek Aviation Systems has been awarded a contract to supply an instrument landing system and distance measurement equipment to Malaysia. The equipment will be installed at the Alor Setar Airport in the north of the country, Grintek said in a statement received in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

‘Half the Iraqis killed were civilians’

Half the Iraqis killed in the United States offensive in the town of Fallujah were women, children and elderly people, a mediator said on Tuesday, but US officials insisted they take all precautions to avoid non-combatants. Meanwhile, a crashed US Apache helicopter was seen burning on the ground outside Fallujah on Tuesday.

    Runaway truck crushes Pretoria motorists

    Trapped beneath a 20-ton truck, two motorists spent their last moments alive watching emergency personnel frantically trying to rescue them in Pretoria on Tuesday. The runaway truck’s brakes failed, its unlicensed driver said, and it careered through seven sets of traffic lights, smashing five vehicles in its path.
