Jomo Cosmos are bracing themselves for a tough game against Kaizer Chiefs in a Premier Soccer League match at Mmabatho Stadium in North West on Sunday. It will be the second professional match staged in Mmabatho after defending champions Orlando Pirates and Silver Stars played to a 2-all draw last Sunday.

While the figures for drought and famine in Southern Africa are less apocalyptic than they were a year ago, the scale of human misery is unacceptably high and an appeal to the international community for special help looks inevitable. The continuing drought and the HIV/Aids epidemic are expected to keep Southern Africa in need of aid for years to come.

A group of Valencia supporters plans to take legal action against referee Pedro Tristante Oliva for awarding a last-minute penalty against their team in last Sunday’s Spanish league match with Real Madrid. About 30 fans have said they hold Tristante Oliva esponsible for “the penalty mistake”.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took another tentative step on the road to full fitness at Altrincham, unconcerned about the threat to his Manchester United place from Louis Saha. The Norwegian forward has managed just an hour of game time since having surgery to correct a knee complaint that has limited him to six appearances this season.

I’ve said all season the Gunners are one Thierry Henry injury away from crisis every week. Now that Arsène Wenger has made his canny dip into the coffers at Highbury, that fear has receded a little. And of course it’s Chelsea again at lunchtime on Saturday after this week’s friendly internationals.
