Sports Minister Ngconde Balfour and a host of sporting federations on Thursday identified a set of at least ten problems during a three-hour meeting at Boksbug, east of Johannesburg. While denying that he cracked the whip with the federations the minister made it clear that the status quo in sport could not continue, and that radical changes were necessary.

Apart from a middle order flurry from all-rounders Scott Styris and Chris Cairns, New Zealand struggled for runs against South Africa on an unhelpful pitch in the one-day international here on Friday. The bowlers relied on movement off the wicket and in the air, and the batsmen on a large measure of luck, as after 22 overs New Zealand were struggling at 79 for four.

The South African men’s hockey team turned in a much-improved performance against Canada on Thursday evening to clinch the third hockey Test by two goals to nil and with it the series at Pretoria Technikon. Despite the morale-boosting series victory, South Africa have plenty of work to do if they hope to qualify for the Olympic Games.

So he was right then, all those weeks ago. At Lord’s, when he held a December thank you to the rugby writers in the Long Room, Clive Woodward told me we’d never see that World Cup winning side again. But now the real shocker. No Neil Back. He’s been left out in the cold.

Former South African under-21 coach Jake White has been named as new Springbok coach on Friday following the resignation of Rudolf Straeuli last year. White beat off the challenges of seven other candidates, most notably the Bulls’ Rudy Joubert and former Bok Sevens coach Chester Williams.
