Deciding on a hiding

John Smit says he, Os du Randt and Eddie Andrews had the beating of France in Durban last weekend. And who are we to doubt the Springbok skipper? He was right there in the middle, after all. What is a little hard to swallow is that most of us watching the game could see quite clearly that this was patently not the case.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are guaranteed to avoid the most powerful sides in Europe should they all reach the group stage of the Champions League. Uefa this week confirmed the club coefficients which are used to calculate each side’s seeding in Europe’s elite club competition.

Ethiopian police release 2 600 detainees

Ethiopian federal police confirmed on Friday the release of 2 665 people detained during week-long disturbances in Addis Ababa against alleged fraud in the May 15 general elections. At least 36 people were killed by police gunfire during the violent clashes, which the government said were instigated by the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy.

JSE down as oil burns world markets

The JSE Securities Exchange was weaker at noon on Friday, with a sizzling oil price burning global bourses. Higher bullion price lent sheen to gold stocks, however. At noon, the all share and all share industrial indices were both down 0,62%. The financial and banks indices had fallen 0,83% and 1,53% respectively.

Man sells ‘shower Jesus’ for $2 000

A United States man has sold a water-stained piece of plaster from his bathroom wall that bears an uncanny resemblance to the image of Jesus Christ for almost  000 on eBay. The image appeared to Jeffrey Rigo (30) as he stepped out of the shower on June 11, prompting him to cut the plaster piece from his wall and put it up for bids on the auction portal.
