Eskom is pushing for a mandatory power conservation programme that would force particularly heavy consumers to save power.
The parastatal’s budget setback has been offset by improved market conditions and
agency ratings.
Eskom has spent more than R75,5-billion on the capital investment programme since 2005, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said on Tuesday.
Mining Minister Susan Shabangu said on Wednesday the government would act if necessary to ensure sufficient coal supplies for power generation.
The demand for electricity is set to increase by about 2% in 2011 as the country’s economy recovers, Eskom CEO Brian Dames said on Thursday.
