Boeing was trying for the world record of the longest-ever commercial flight on Wednesday, with its new 777 Worldliner set for a 23-hour flight from Hong Kong to London — flying east over the United States. The company said a demonstration model of the 777-200LR would go east rather than the usual western route over the Russian Federation.

The United States and other nations have frozen more than $150-million of "terrorist assets" in the global anti-terrorism fight, a senior US official said on Wednesday. "Key financiers have been detained, over $150-million of terrorist assets have been frozen and millions more blocked in transit or seized at borders," said US State Department counterrorism co-ordinator Henry Crumpton.

A deliberate policy of depreciating the rand could have undesirable effects, South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni told the Bureau for Economic Research conference in Somerset West on Wednesday. "One of the calls frequently made is for deliberate depreciation of the exchange value of the rand," Mboweni said.

Cape Town’s Catholic archbishop received a verbal lashing from Camps Bay church members for not reporting a paedophilic priest to police, the Cape Times website reported on Wednesday. It said Archbishop Lawrence Henry apologised to his critics at a meeting on Tuesday night, saying he did not tell police because he did not know he was required to report it.

China warned on Wednesday a bird flu outbreak in northeastern Liaoning province had not yet been controlled and could become a ”disaster”, mainly due to the use of fake and shoddy poultry vaccines. ”In Heishan county, Liaoning province, the epidemic is still serious,” said Agriculture Minister Du Qingling, two weeks after poultry started dying from the bird flu there.
