London-headquartered Vodafone’s offer to increase its stake from 35% to 50% in local mobile network Vodacom was on Thursday hailed as a vote of confidence in South Africa’s political landscape and economic prospects. Nothing will stop Jacob Zuma becoming the next president of the ruling African National Congress, and possibly the country, if he is acquitted of corruption, political analysts said on Thursday. Independent analyst Aubrey Matshiqi said: ”If Zuma is acquitted, not even a bullet will stop him.”

A New Zealand oil company appealed on Thursday to 50 motorists who bought petrol at a give-away price after a worker put a decimal point in the wrong place on a self-service pump to come forward and pay the full amount. The service station sold petrol at 14,9 New Zealand cents (about R0,69) a litre for two days last month.

British mobile telephone group Vodafone said on Thursday it is in exclusive negotiations to acquire a further 15% of South African operator Vodacom for up to R16-billion (,4-billion). This would increase Vodafone’s shareholding in Vodacom to 50%.

A former South African police officer who moved to Britain for a career change has won the dubious distinction of becoming Britain’s ”most arresting” police officer, The Times reported on Thursday. Police Constable Diederik Coetzee has been acclaimed for making 309 arrests so far this year in the British county of Nottinghamshire.

Listed furniture, electronic and electric appliances retailer JD Group has reported a 36% rise in its headline earnings per share for the year to the end of August 2005 to 704,7 cents, from 518,5 cents a year earlier. The group declared a final dividend of 167 cents per share.
