Warning: Bird flu could devastate Africa

Veterinary experts from across Africa warned on Thursday that an avian-flu outbreak could prove devastating to the continent because of the poor facilities and inadequate monitoring capacity in many countries. The officials also outlined measures to deal with the deadly virus should it reach Africa.

Vodafone’s vote of confidence in SA

London-headquartered Vodafone’s offer to increase its stake from 35% to 50% in local mobile network Vodacom was on Thursday hailed as a vote of confidence in South Africa’s political landscape and economic prospects. Vodafone has offered to acquire VenFin’s 15% holding in Vodacom for an estimated R16-billion.

SA cop in UK breaks arrest record

A former South African police officer who moved to Britain for a career change has won the dubious distinction of becoming Britain’s ”most arresting” police officer, The Times reported on Thursday. Police Constable Diederik Coetzee has been acclaimed for making 309 arrests so far this year in the British county of Nottinghamshire.

JD Group reports rise in earnings

Listed furniture, electronic and electric appliances retailer JD Group has reported a 36% rise in its headline earnings per share for the year to the end of August 2005 to 704,7 cents, from 518,5 cents a year earlier. The group declared a final dividend of 167 cents per share.
