Chiefs win Premiership after draw

Orlando Pirates finished runner-up to their Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs on the final day of the Castle Premiership season on Sunday. The Buccaneers had to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bush Bucks, who scored at the death through Gomasha Marnilisi after Pirates had done all the attacking.

Raikkonen romps home for McLaren

Kimi Raikkonen won the Monaco Grand Prix to secure his second consecutive victory for McLaren with a controlled performance as rivals Renault struggled in the sunny principality on Sunday. Raikkonen, who started from his third consecutive pole position, proved he is now the man in form as McLaren executed aperfect one-stop strategy.

Waratahs: ‘You never know’

The New South Wales Waratahs have seized underdog status for next weekend’s Super 12 rugby final with Canterbury Crusaders, but coach Ewen McKenzie has warned that their season of firsts may not yet be over. The Crusaders are in their seventh Super 12 final in 10 seasons after obliterating the Wellington Hurricanes 47-7.

Rubber-band excuse does not fly in court

A jury has rejected a woman’s argument that a car accident was caused after she bit into a tuna sandwich and choked on a rubber band. Michelle Lynn Lazzell claimed she started choking after taking a bite of the sandwich. Her husband, who was driving at the time, tried to slap his wife on the back, but their vehicle veered off the road.

Belgian film wins coveted Cannes award

The Child, a Belgian drama about a petty thief who sells his baby son, won the Cannes film festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or on Saturday at a red-carpet ceremony. The movie, by director brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, triumphed over a field of 20 other pictures by a veteran pack of filmmakers.

Opec vows to support economic stability

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) said on Saturday it is committed to support the stability of the world economy by responding to the world’s demand for oil, and support sustainable development in the Middle East. Opec’s president was addressing the Dead Sea summit of the World Economic Forum in Jordan.
