Tens of millions of rands of Lotto money earmarked for charities and good causes is lying undistributed in the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. Over a 100 non-profit organisations were affected, DA social development spokesperson Janet Semple told a parliamentary media briefing.
The police have been accused of harassing street traders and charging them exorbitant fines. In a street-traders’ survey released on Wednesday, most of the traders interviewed — 94% — said they had been harassed by police. At least 82% of street traders said they had had their goods confiscated by the police and had difficulty in recovering them.

Consumer rights champion Isabel Jones died in the early hours of Mach 11, said her son Adam Jones. Described at one time as all that stood between South Africans and high prices, Jones underwent heart surgery in November and made a full recovery, her son said.
South African mobile telecommunications group Vodacom and its shareholders, together with Rand Merchant Bank, a division of FirstRand Bank, are currently in the process of structuring a R7,5-billion black economic empowerment (BEE) transaction, it said on Monday. The Vodacom group said that its BEE transaction was "well on track".

The newly established Isivande Women’s Fund is a step towards reducing poverty among women, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said on Monday. Unveiling the fund logo to business and media at the presidential guest house in Pretoria, the deputy president said it will help mainly black woman entrepreneurs.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday reiterated that it was "not at odds" with petrochemical giant Sasol over its proposed R7-billion employment share-ownership scheme. "Media reports about the Sasol … black economic empowerment [BEE] deal would seem to indicate that there is some confusion about the department’s position," the DTI said in a statement.

South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said on Friday that it was concerned that the proposed Employee Share Ownership Scheme (ESOP) proposed under Sasol’s R17,9-billion black economic empowerment (BEE) deal "falls short of the level of empowerment envisioned in the Codes [of Good Practice]".
On paper, Proudly South African probably seemed like a good idea. In practice, it’s turned out rather differently.
