Red Cross: Forgotten disasters struggle for aid

The world spent -billion battling disasters in 2005 but this was unevenly distributed, leaving many without help, the Red Cross Society said in Johannesburg on Thursday. ”A large chunk of this aid was spread unevenly,” said the chairperson of the national standing committee for disaster management of the South African Red Cross Society, Prince Monare.

Zimbabwean police torture 33% of political detainees, according to a study on police brutality released in Johannesburg on Thursday. ”The Zimbabwean government has reverted to patterns of state control established under colonialism,” said Archbishop Pius Ncube of the Solidarity Peace Trust. These include mass arrests under repressive legislation.

Jo’burg hit by power failure

Much of Johannesburg was plunged into darkness on Thursday afternoon because of a power failure. The electricity went down shortly before 1pm when supply to the Fordsburg substation was lost, said Johannesburg City Power spokesperson Louis Pieterse. It is one of the city’s main intake substations where electricity is imported from Eskom, he said.

A week-long tuberculosis (TB) blitz in the Northern Cape has shown that patients are not complying with their TB treatment, the provincial health department said on Thursday. The Northern Cape provincial minister for health, Shiwe Selao, visited communities such as Kommagas in Namaqualand and Upington in the Siyanda district during the week-long TB blitz.

Armed men go on Pretoria crime spree

Three armed men went on a robbery and hijacking spree in Pretoria on Wednesday, police said. Inspector Anton Breedt said the men began their spree at a travel agency in the Willows shopping centre. ”They held up staff at gunpoint and robbed them of two laptops. The suspects fled in a white Volkswagen Polo Playa.”

Govt confirms canned hunting to be banned

The government will ban canned hunting, despite media reports to the contrary, the Department of Environmental Affairs confirmed on Wednesday. The ban will come into effect in March next year, with the promulgation of regulations in terms of the Biodiversity Act, it said in a statement. The new regulations were unveiled to the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
