Royal wedding beats pope’s funeral in ratings

Hundreds of millions of people around the world tuned in to watch Pope John Paul II’s funeral on television, but more people in The Netherlands watched Prince Charles’s wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles, according to figures published on Sunday.

About 1,9-million people in the largely Protestant Netherlands watched Saturday’s royal wedding, compared with 1,3-million who watched the pope’s funeral at the Vatican a day earlier.

The figures, published by the Stichting KijkOnderzoek institute and reported by the Dutch news agency ANP, included the number of people who watched live broadcasts of the events as well as special programming either before or afterwards.

Both the wedding and the funeral were carried on public and commercial television. — AFP
