Fallen hero Tyson set for hearing in drugs case

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is scheduled for a hearing this month in which he could change his plea in a narcotics case.

The 41-year-old boxer previously pleaded not guilty to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs. A spokesperson for Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas wouldn’t comment on any possible plea agreement.

The hearing is on September 24, and Tyson is not bound to change his plea at that time.

Tyson was arrested last year in suburban Scottsdale. Police says they found bags of cocaine in his back pocket and another in a pack of cigarettes in his car.

Thomas has promised to pursue prison time for Tyson, noting the boxer was convicted of rape in Indiana in 1992. Tyson also pleaded no contest to misdemeanour assault charges in Maryland in 1999. — Sapa-AP
