Swedish feminists want to drop their tops

Swedish feminists have continued their campaign to drop their tops at indoor swimming pools, reports said on Thursday.

In recent weeks, they have challenged the ban against swimming topless and formed a network that has staged several protests.

The campaign began after an incident in September when two young women were ordered to leave the public swimming hall in the city of Uppsala after swimming topless.

The incident was reported in local media, and generated similar protests in other cities including Malmo and Lund.

A recent development was a decision to file a complaint over discrimination with the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman, the watchdog in charge of ensuring equal opportunity between men and women, the Kvallsposten newspaper said on Thursday.

The activists have called their network ”Bara Brost”, which can translate as ”bare breasts” or ”just breasts”.

On its website, the network said its aim is to liberate women from being treated as ”sexual objects” and that women should be able to decide when it is suitable to drop their tops — or not.

Officials of municipal swimming halls have cited hygiene rules and that other guests may be offended as reasons for upholding the rule that female guests should wear a bikini top or regular swimsuit in the pool or pool area. — Sapa-dpa
