Racism on the increase, says rights commission

Blatant racism appears to be on the increase in South Africa, with legislation doing too little to eliminate it, a South African Human Rights Commission report released on Thursday said.

The Human Rights Development Report said racist incidents, like a controversial video shot at the University of Free State, reminded the country of the danger of regression.

”Deeply entrenched social attitudes are reproducing new forms of racial prejudice,” researchers found.

They also wrote that poverty and crime should be treated as human rights violations.

They recommended that South Africa should draft legislation on hate crimes.

They also noted that although South Africa has one of the most progressive constitutions worldwide for gender equality, some cultural traditions and rights are deeply paternalistic. — Sapa
