England rugby players in NZ police probe

Police in New Zealand are investigating a ”serious allegation” against four England rugby players over an incident in an Auckland hotel room, police and team bosses said on Wednesday.

The alleged incident itself remained shrouded in mystery, with both police and the England management refusing to describe the nature of the claim.

It is said to have occurred hours after England were thrashed 37-20 by the All Blacks in the first of their two-Test series.

The second Test is in Christchurch on Saturday.

In a brief press conference, acting head coach Rob Andrew refused to answer any questions over the reported incident in the Hilton Hotel early on Sunday.

However, Andrew said the players had the full support of the management and team.

”The England rugby team has been informed by Auckland police that an allegation has been made against four members of the England playing squad,” he said in Christchurch, reading out a statement issued earlier.

”Whilst no formal complaint has been made, we are cooperating with the police in their inquiries. In the circumstances, we are unable to make any further comment,” he added.

”Can I simply add, the players concerned have the complete support of all players and management.

”I am sure you will understand and respect the fact that no further comment can be made or questions asked of either myself or the players on this matter.”

Auckland police had earlier confirmed they were investigating a ”serious allegation” against up to four players.

”Whilst an allegation was brought to the attention of police on Sunday evening, no formal complaint has been received,” police said in a statement.

Auckland city police spokesperson Noreen Hegarty told the New Zealand Press Association the allegation was serious but would not elaborate, nor confirm if it was made by a woman.

Hegarty added that unless someone was able to corroborate the allegation it could end up ”going nowhere”.
