Durban socialite stabs himself, leaps from window

Durban socialite and businessman Prince Sifiso Zulu, who is facing culpable homicide charges, apparently stabbed himself several times before jumping from a window to escape arrest, newspapers reported on Wednesday.

He is now under police guard in Durban’s Entabeni Hospital in a serious condition.

”It is believed he sustained a single stab wound to his neck and two more to his chest. He is also believed to have a fractured left arm as a result of the fall and also a potentially fractured leg,” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha was quoted as saying by the Star.

When the police arrived at Zulu’s flat on Tuesday evening to arrest him on a charge of defeating the ends of justice, he apparently locked himself in the bedroom, stabbed himself and then jumped from the second-floor window.

Zulu is facing culpable homicide charges after an accident on March 29 in which his BMW crashed into a bakkie and killed two people at a traffic light.

The driver fled the scene after the accident but Zulu, who was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident, denied that he had been driving.

He was arrested and faces culpable homicide charges. He also faces another charge of drunken driving in a separate case.

The Times newspaper reported that the police had obtained arrest warrants for both Zulu and a private investigator hired by him. The paper quoted police spokesperson Phindile Radebe as saying there were allegations that the investigator had been ”interfering” in a police matter.

The Star newspaper reported that the two men possibly colluded to hide a witness in the case. – Sapa
