Soweto’s main roads renamed

Soweto’s two oldest main roads are to be renamed after anti-apartheid struggle leaders next week, the City of Johannesburg said on Friday.

Spokesperson Nthatise Modingoane said the Old Potch and Roodepoort roads would be renamed after late African National Congress stalwarts Chris Hani and Elias Motsoaledi, both Umkhonto we Sizwe commanders.

He said from Tuesday the Old Potch Road, which stretches from Diepkloof to Protea South, will be known as the Chris Hani Road.

The Roodepoort Road, which joins the Old Potch in Rockville from Florida, will be renamed the Elias Motsoaledi Road.

Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo will host an official renaming ceremony at the Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Rockville on Tuesday. — Sapa
