Madiba food book wins award

 JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Dec 18 2008 17:34

Hunger for Freedom, a cook book that details the favourite foods of former president Nelson Mandela, has won an international award, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Thursday.

The book, sub-titled "the story of food in the life of Nelson Mandela" by Anna Trapido, won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award.

The book was published this year by Jacana Media in association with the Foundation to coincide with Mandela's 90th birthday.

Foundation chief executive Achmat Dangor said the foundation was informed of the victory on Thursday by Spain-based Edouard Cointreau, the president of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

The book will now go into the next round of the awards to compete against winners from around the world for the "The Best in the World" award.

The winners will be announced in May 2009. -- Sapa
