Bogus ‘police officers’ nabbed

Four men were arrested on Friday for allegedly posing as police officers and robbing people returning from the OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg police said.

”They followed people who drove themselves home after a flight into Johannesburg,” Inspector Lunga Mahonja said.

He said the men allegedly flashed a fake police badge at their victims, and then asked them to pull over.

Once they pulled over, the ”police officers” would then tell them that they were from the ”tourism and drug control unit”, and needed to search their bags.

”The robbers asked them to cooperate if they did not want to be hurt.

”The four then ransacked the victim’s belongings, before speeding off in a silver Audi.”

Eight similar cases were reported since January this year.

”The public should be aware that no tourism and drug control unit exists,” he said.

The men were arrested in Centurion and would be appearing in court shortly, Mahonja added. — Sapa
