Ex-Ekurhuleni manager to bag R4-million

The Ekurhuleni municipality will pay sacked city manager Patrick Flusk R4-million before tax as part of a settlement, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) radio news reported late on Thursday.

The African National Congress (ANC) majority council members voted in favour of the settlement, but the opposition parties were opposed to it.

This emerged following a closed meeting at the Germiston council chambers in Ekurhuleni.

Flusk was fired in March due to the municipality’s poor service delivery.

Ekurhuleni mayor Lentheng Mekgwe told the SABC: ”If you recall very well in the council meeting that took the decision to terminate the contract, I was mandated to enter into negotiations with Patrick Flusk.

”It was agreed that we were going to pay him as per contract he signed with the council.

”If we did not terminate the contract now, his contract was normally going to end in June 2011. Now because we brought the termination forward the council is liable to pay the full balance,” Mekgwe said.

In March Gauteng minister for local government Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu said Flusk had his contract terminated because he had undermined the city mayor.

”You can’t have two bulls in one kraal. You can’t have a city manager who undermines the mayor.”
