Worker dies at Gold Fields mine

A mine worker died in a rock fall at the Gold Fields Kloof Mine near Westonaria, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Wednesday.

A mine worker died in a rock fall at the Gold Fields Kloof Mine near Westonaria, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Wednesday.

According to the NUM, the worker died in a rock fall following a seismic event that measured 1,5 on the Richter Scale on Tuesday night.

“Two mine workers were trapped of whom one was recovered dead,” the union said in a statement.

It added that the other mine worker was still missing.

“Rescue teams have been dispatched to search for him”.

The union called on Gold Fields “to do all it can to ensure the safe return of the missing mine worker”.

NUM also condemned Gold Fields’s approach to mine safety.

Gold Fields confirmed the accident, saying it would release more information later on Wednesday.—Sapa
