Absa group chief executive Maria Ramos has been named the world’s ninth most-influential businesswoman in Fortune magazine’s 2009 Global Leaders survey.

In a statement on Wednesday, Absa said that last year she was ranked 22nd on the publication’s International Power 50 list, while still CEO of Transnet.

“In 2007 she was listed at number 14, and the previous year she occupied the 16th spot,” Absa added.

In July this year Ramos—who also serves on the executive committee of the World Bank’s Chief Economist Advisory Panel—was honoured as the Outstanding Businesswoman of the Year at the 2009 African Business Awards in London.—Sapa
