Mboweni named new AngloGold Ashanti chairperson

Former South African Reserve Bank (SARB) governor Tito Mboweni has been appointed the new chairperson of AngloGold Ashanti, the company said on Wednesday.

Mboweni’s appointment takes effect from June 1 2010. He succeeds Russell Edey.

“We’re very pleased to be able to name someone of Tito Mboweni’s calibre to chair our board. His experience and stature, both in South Africa and abroad, is a tremendous asset to a company with AngloGold Ashanti’s global portfolio and project pipeline, as well as our international shareholder base,” said AngloGold chief executive Mark Cutifani.

Mboweni served as South Africa’s labour minister from 1994 to 1998 and then headed the SARB.

Cutifani also wished Edey, who is retiring after eight years as chairperson, well.

Mboweni has also been appointed as the chairperson of packaging group Nampak since leaving SARB. He succeeds outgoing chairperson Trevor Evans from June 1. — Sapa
