South African Airways (SAA) will sell 45 000 plane tickets it had reserved for the Soccer World Cup at a discount, an official said on Tuesday.
“Match initially required 45 000 return seats for the World Cup. But the number of seats they required kept dropping until it got to 1 000,” SAA spokesperson Vimla Maistry told the South African Press Association.
The tickets would be made available at a cheaper price. Maistry could not immediately say how much cheaper they would be.
“We thought we had those seats sold already. Our intention will be to sell those seats.”
Match, Fifa’s official hospitality partner for the Soccer World Cup, intended to use SAA to move fans to and from smaller cities that might not have enough accommodation for the tournament.
The airline said its decision did not affect other agreements it had with Match. — Sapa
