Britons die in road accident on eve of Cup

Two British tourists were killed and at least 18 injured when their overland truck crashed on Thursday in northeastern South Africa on the eve of the Soccer World Cup, police said.

“They were on their way from Swaziland to Nelspruit and, at a town called Barberton … the driver lost control” and the truck flipped over, said police spokesperson Colonel Leon Engelbrecht.

He said two women died instantly and the rest were taken to hospital, adding that one of those injured was in a critical condition.

The crash happened around midday.

It was not immediately clear if the victims were in South Africa for the Soccer World Cup. The England team is due to play the United States on Saturday in the town of Rustenburg in one of the tournament’s first matches. — AFP
