Selebi set to appeal conviction

Former police national commissionerJackie Selebi was set to return to court on Monday to try and appeal his corruption conviction and jail sentence.

Former police national commissionerJackie Selebi was set to return to the high court in Johannesburg on Monday to try and appeal his corruption conviction and 15-year jail sentence.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) last month said Selebi would ask the court for permission to appeal.

Selebi has argued that his prosecution was improper, manipulated and based on ulterior motives.

Judge Meyer Joffe found him guilty of receiving money from convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti and sentenced him to jail in July this year.

Selebi has claimed however that state prosecutor Gerrie Nel was out to get him because of his involvement in the process to shut down the Scorpions. - Sapa
