How to invest in gold with R1 000

MAYA FISHER-FRENCH - Sep 09 2010 08:24

Devotion asks: Can I invest in gold in South Africa with R500 or must I save to get more than R10 000 first?

Maya replies: There are two ways you can invest in gold with a smaller investment: Absa NewGold or Krugerrands.

Absa NewGold is an exchange-traded fund listed on the JSE which tracks the gold price. You can invest with a minimum investment of R1 000 or a debit order of R300 a month through www.etfsa.co.za. You will also find further information about Absa NewGold on the website.

Alternatively you can start collecting Krugerrands, which you can purchase through companies like the South Africa Gold Coin Exchange (www.sagoldcoin.com).

You can buy smaller Krugerrands such as a 1/10 ounce coin, which would cost about R900 depending on the gold price at the time.
