Mandela's son-in-law wanted by US police

US law enforcement authorities have issued an extradition request to South Africa for Nelson Mandela's son-in-law, Isaac Kwame Amuah.

US law enforcement authorities have issued an extradition request to South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s son-in-law, Isaac Kwame Amuah, the Sunday Times reported.

Amuah, husband of Makaziwe Mandela, the eldest daughter of Nelson Mandela, is wanted for a rape in 1993 in Hartford, Connecticut. He is accused of raping a student while he was an assistant professor at a community college there, the newspaper reported.

Spokesperson for the US embassy in South Africa Elizabeth Trudeau said: “This is an ongoing criminal investigation so we cannot talk in detail about this issue.

“However, generally in the case of any extradition request we work in close cooperation with the host government and no actions are taken without the knowledge and support of the host government.”

Amuah, a Ghanain national, allegedly skipped bail in the US and came to South Africa where he worked as the director of the Foundation for Research Development.

Makaziwe Mandela is the daughter of former president Mandela and his first wife, Evelyn Mase.
