Mistakes had cropped up in the national 2010 matric report and at least three schools listed with a zero pass had in fact passed, the education department said on Friday.
“There were a few mistakes in the report, which were picked up yesterday [Thursday], and we communicated that to all the provinces,” spokesperson Granville Whittle told the South African Press Association (Sapa).
“But it was just in our report. The schools got the right data.”
On Thursday, the department said no pupils passed at 18 schools, five of these were in the Eastern Cape, six in Limpopo and four in KwaZulu-Natal. The Free State, Western Cape and Gauteng had one each. But Whittle explained that the mistakes did not include the figure of 18.
Apology
The department was expected to issue an apology to the affected schools.
One of the affected schools was Dominican Grimley in the Western Cape, which is a school for deaf children.
The report listed it has having no matric passes when in fact it had a 100% pass rate.
Principal Maria Kerbelker told Sapa on Friday that five learners had written the exam and all five had passed.
“All five passed so we actually got a 100% pass rate,” she said. — Sapa
