Ancyl Commends Egyptian Youth

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) on Friday evening commended the “disciplined” youth of Egypt, saying it was they who had toppled President Hosni Mubarak.

“The success of the Egyptian revolution happens exactly the same day [former president] Nelson Mandela was released [from prison] 21 years ago,” spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said.

Every step of the way, the basic fact of the uprising in Egypt has become more obvious and more explicit: with each new confrontation, the protestors have realised, and demonstrated, that they are more powerful than their oppressors.

“The victory of the Egyptian revolution is a great inspiration to young people of the world in the political and economic struggles.”

He said young people under political oppression across the globe should draw inspiration from the youth of Egypt and rise up against repression.

“With the collapse of Mubarak’s regime, all progressive forces across the world should contribute towards the building of a democratic and free Egypt.”

Mubarak stepped down on Friday evening after three decades of autocratic rule. He handed power to a group of senior military commanders.
