Khune replaces Tau as Chiefs’ captain

Kaizer Chiefs has named goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune as their new captain on Tuesday as Jimmy Tau was dismissed as captain but remains in the team.

Kaizer Chiefs named goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune as their new captain on Tuesday, following speculation about the future of Jimmy Tau’s role in the team.

The news comes after coach Vladimir Vermezovic said on Sunday that Tau was still in the team, but was no longer the captain.

The club had previously denied that Tau had resigned after a dressing room argument with Vermezovic, and the skipper had said in a statement he hoped to retain the leadership role.

“I am honoured to be leading a special group of players … I also wish to clarify that there are no issues between me and the head coach,” Tau said.

Chiefs said Khune would be “supported by a committee of players” including Tinashe Nengomasha, Kaizer Motaung Jnr, George Lebese and Lawrence Molekwane.

Khune (24) has played for Chiefs thoughout his career, starting off in the youth side in 1999 before making it into the senior team in 2004. — Sapa
