Public protector's gaze falls on Derby-Lewis

Thuli Madonsela's office says the protector is looking into the medical parole matter of Clive Derby-Lewis, who killed SACP leader Chris Hani in 1993.

The office of the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela confirmed she was looking into the medical parole matter of convicted murderer Clive Derby-lewis, SABC news reported on Tuesday night.

“We are treating it as an early resolution matter. The way we deal with matters here is that I can use my investigative or dispute resolution powers,” Madonsela was quoted as saying.

Derby-Lewis (75) has served 18 years of his 25 years sentence.

He and Yanusz Walus were convicted for the 1993 murder of SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani.

Derby-Lewis has twice been denied ordinary parole in the past.

According to the broadcaster, his lawyer said he was being treated for prostate and skin cancer, and would be available for parole again in two years time.

Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was reported to have not received the medical parole application of Derby-Lewis.—Sapa
