Buthelezi worried about political corruption

IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi has said he is worried about the amount of corruption and self-serving ambition that has flooded into politics.

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) President Mangosuthu Buthelezi on Sunday said he was worried about the amount of corruption and self-serving ambition that had flooded into politics.

“You must vigilantly watch out for corrupt councillors and hold them accountable for their practices,” he said at Mpofana near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

He added that there were people in high positions everywhere who were abusing the powers that had been entrusted to them.

He said the local government elections had changed the mandate, which the electorate gave to the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal adding that the voters had asked the IFP to take up the place of opposition politics, instead of running municipalities in that province.

“The IFP has shed most of the responsibilities of governance. This has enabled us to take a strong opposition role.”

Buthelezi said the IFP’s political opponents and media pundits had concluded his party was finished before the elections.

They then realised that the soul of the IFP was in the service of the nation, he said.

“There is no reason why we should be discouraged by the strength of our opposition,” Buthelezi said.—Sapa
