Refiners tender for South Africa's gasoil supply

Refiners in South Africa are seeking nearly 80 000 tonnes of diesel for delivery in January through spot tenders issued late last week.

Refiners in South Africa are seeking nearly 80 000 tonnes of diesel for delivery in January through spot tenders issued late last week, industry sources said on Tuesday.

Chevron is seeking 30 000 tonnes of 500 ppm sulphur gasoil and 8 000 tonnes of 50 ppm sulphur gasoil for delivery over January 10-14 and January 22-26 into Cape Town, they said.

The tender closes on January 5 and is valid until January 6.

Total South Africa is seeking 40 000 tonnes of 500 ppm sulphur gasoil for delivery over January 15-25 into Durban. That tender closes on January 3 with same-day validity.

Both companies usually purchase diesel to import into South Africa through private negotiations and rarely enter the spot market via tenders, industry sources said.

The reason for the requirements is unclear but one source said it could be spill over demand from the Christmas period.—Reuters
