WC ANCYL questioned over conference bungle

The Western Cape ANC Youth League will be called to the party’s provincial headquarters to explain why the league failed to hold its elective conference at the weekend, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Argus reported ANC provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile as saying the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) expected a “full explanation” on why the league did not elect a chairperson on Friday night.

Provincial chairperson and Deputy International Relations Minister Marius Fransman said the PEC would be forced to intervene if the league failed to elect someone.

The two main contenders for the post were Jonton Snyman and Luvo Makasi.

Organisers failed to secure a quorum for the conference on Friday, as only 280 delegates registered instead of the required 338 delegates.

On Saturday, a second attempt failed when Snyman’s supporters accused Fransman of a smear campaign against their candidate and openly lobbying for Makasi to win.

Fransman reportedly rubbished the accusations and said the league should focus on real issues.
